Error while creating a Enterprise Wiki sub site in SharePoint 2010

A customer of mine had a problem in a it’s SharePoint 2010 farm. An error occurred while creating a sub site of type Enterprise Wiki. The user that tried to create the sub site was not a site collection administrator and did not have Full Control permissions.

Steps:

1. Try to create the sub site:

2. Press “Create” button:

image

Error: “An error has occurred while processing your request.”

3. Retry with the same name for the sub site:

Error: “The Web site address … is already in use.”

At the same moment a site collection administrator could successfully create a Enterprise Wiki sub site!

I could solve the problem and reproduce it in my testing environment: The security settings of the site collections masterpage catalog had broken inheritance and nobody had any rights on this list. This does not seems to be a problem in most cases but it’s a problem while creating a Enterprise Wiki sub site. – Adding “read” access for “All authenticated users” solved the problem.

  1. i am facing the same problem with the same steps , in my case the customer is trying to create a custom sup site , deployed on the farm , but the same error facing him every time , i granted him a full control authority but it didn’t help
    any idea plzzz

    • Hi!

did you check that the site does not exists? May be it’s another error with the same error message as in my case. – Try SharePoint Manager 2010 (Codeplex) to analyze the SharePoint site structure.

In the next step I would recommand to review the SharePoint logs. Is there any error? – You may post temp here!

Did you check the masterpage catalog permissions. As written in my blog article I’d recommand you to set “Read” permission on it for “All Authenticated Users”!!!

  2. Hi,

I also have the same problem, even site owners can’t create any site (even Blank site), except the System Account.

Whatever solution you have suggested is also not working.

I also reviewed the Sharepoint log, there I found that, it is successfully creating the site, applying the features, applying the template, but then it is giving the error as “0x80070005Access denied”. Then next it is Deleting the site.

Also, when the owner is trying to create a list, it’s throwing the same error, but when I check it by going to “Site Actions->View All Site Content”, it is present there, also it is inheriting the permission from the site too.

So, what might be the problem for creating the site.

After lot of research and R&D, I found that when I am going to “Central Admin -> Security -> Users -> Specify web application user policy”, and here when I am adding “NT AUTHORITYauthenticated user” with “Full Read” permission, then the site owners now are able to create sites.

But this is a security threat, since all the users will now have the read access to everything.

So, now I wanted to know where/on what the user is getting the additional read permission so that he is able to create the site.
